The Volkswagen I.D. made its opposition début at the Pikes Peak International Hill move in Colorado Springs, Colorado on June 24, 2018. It was driven by Romain Dumas, and the group set an objective of beating the current electric vehicle record of 8:57.118 minutes, set in 2016 by Rhys Millen with the Drive eO PP100. The I.D. R turned into the main vehicle to finish the slope move in less than eight minutes (7:57.148), breaking the out and out record set by Sébastien Loeb and the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak. The normal speed during the run was 150.9 km/h(93.77 mi/h), and 218 km/h(127.58 mi/h) through the speed trap.

On 3 June 2019, the ID.R utilized 24.7 kWh to break the electric vehicle lap record on the Nürburgring with a period of 6:05.336, cornering at up to 3.49 G. The record time was recently held by the NIO EP9 driven by Peter Dumbreck. The ID.R driver was a four-time champ of the 24-hour race, Romain Dumas, who arrived at velocities of 273 km/h(169.65 mi/h), for a normal of 205.3 km/h(127.58 mi/h).  In 2019, the I.D. R set another precedent for the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb checking in at 39.90, likewise by Romain Dumas.
